OVERVIEW
A thatched rondavel (‘round house’) always evokes the safaris of the past. At River Rock Lodge in Klaserie Private Game Reserve, the history of pioneering safaris lives on in flickering lanterns, clawfoot bathtubs and frothy mosquito nets but with modern conveniences like a swimming pool, Wi-Fi and an airstrip.
The focus here is on the game and the great outdoors: in addition to game drives, night drives and nature walks, guests on longer stays can enjoy sleepouts, seasonal frogging, boating on the Oliphants River and helicopter flips over the Blyde River Canyon. Conservation of vulnerable species like pangolin, cheetah, rhino and wild dog is a key concern at River Rock and you can be impressed by the precision training of the K9 anti-poaching unit. There are only six rondavels, creating an intimate lodge near the Klaserie River. Children over five are welcome.
