North West was created after the end of Apartheid in 1994 – giving the area a rich history and a significant role in the development of South Africa as it is today.
The Province has a total of 14 national parks and provincial reserves within its borders, all home to an abundance of wild animals, including the African wild dog and the Big Five. The largest, Pilanesberg Game Reserve, is in the crater of an extinct volcano, and at the top of the North West Province bordering on Mozambique is the prestigious Madikwe Game Reserve.

For history buffs – the museum in Mafikeng has exhibits relating to the Siege of Mafeking, the Barolong people and the Bushmen. The towns of Lichtenburg, Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom are also worth a visit if history is of interest.

The North West Province has a wide array of species, ecosystem and habitats – mainly due to the diverse nature of the province’s landscapes and variation in climate.

The Kalahari thornveld and shrub bushveld are found in the arid and semi-arid western region, while dry Cymbopogon-themeda veld is in the central area, and a number of mixed bushveld types found in the eastern sector.

The Province has several endemic species of plant, but also rare and threatened species of wildlife such as the wild dog.
