Situated on the banks of the Crocodile River is the north-eastern city of Nelspruit, capital of Mpumalanga province. Acting as a major stopover for visitors travelling to the Kruger National Park, Nelspruit is nestled in a very scenic region of South Africa known as the Lowveld rich with rolling hills and picturesque horizons, as well as the Highveld – slightly further afield but notably majestic with its open plains and unparalleled views. Nearby attractions include the renowned Panorama Route, Blyde River Canyon and of course the Kruger National Park. The 19th century gold rush in the area spurred on development and today the city has a population of around 4 million people. Climate-wise, one can expect mild winters and warm summers when visiting.
Mpumalanga, the province that is home to the Big 5 gets its name from the Swazi expression “the place where the sun rises” and this holds true. There arent many places in the country where youll find such amazing landscapes coupled with a plethora of bird and animal species.
The winter months are the best time to visit Nelspruit & surrounds. Blessed with a moderate climate ranging from minimum temperatures of around 12 degrees to highs of around 25 degrees, this is also the best time to visit to view wildlife as by this time the vegetation has substantially thinned, providing excellent game viewing.

Lush plantations, scenic escarpments and hidden valleys form the landscape of Nelspruit and surrounds. Ancient acacia, ironwood and fig trees are just a few of the varieties that overhang this magnificent landscape, with a multitude of bird and mammal species to be found.
